The Times last week carried a report, datelined Lisbon, April 26, which was concerned with a manifesto calling for better conditions for Wickext pas Portugal. The report stated that the manifesto is boing distritmted and it is hoped to present it to the Minister of Economy on May lst. Tho manifesto, which is unsigned, also calls for the end of the Angola war and an amnesty for all political prisoners and exiles, It urges workers to gather at the Ministry of Economy when the document is due to be prosented,

It states: “Our lives are becoming more and morse painful and difficult. Salaries and wages do not moet even our most immediate nesis", Emphasizing difficulties in obtaining adequate food, clothing, sducation, health services, and housing, the manifesto statss that the cost of living is rising frightoningly; there has been a serious shortages of potatoes, rice, olive oil, and dried cod fish. These form the sta le dist of the Portugusse worker. Speculators with influence in the state corporative organization are accused of exploitation, The manifesto demands a general rise in pay for workors, lower rents and solution of the housing problem, lower taxes, and better aducation for under—privilaged children.

At a meeting hold in the Lisbon School of Economics on April 26th. university students told reporters that they would continue to fight for "the essential liberties for all Portuguese which are contained in the constitution", They complained of Government restrictions on their activities, They hoped to hold a holiday camp in the summer at which they would alaborate a future paln of action, Studentsa complained that Dr. -Gaivao Teles, the new Minister of Education, and Dr. Paulo Cunha, the Rector of the University, had not fulfilled the promises to make essential reforms in the university after last year's students! strike, (From a London correspondent. )
