On October 17th, the Sunderland shipyard of Short Drothers launched the last vessel on its order book, a 20,500 deadweight ton bulk carrier, the Carlton, for Chapman and Willan, of Newcastle, ‘She was the 19th ship Shorts had tuilt for Chapman and Willan.

It is now well over a year since Shorts booked their last work. 500 men are employed in the yard, and although limited redundancy will follow this launching, the labour force should be maintained at ite present level for the next 2 months, This would ensure that the Carlton was ready for sea before Christmas,
