from an American reader

In many American towns, particularly since the moves to form a Freedom Now Party, the struggle against segregation is merging with : the endeavours of organsied labour. Two recent examples are instructive. In Baltimore the Civic Rights Group is actively collaborating with the AFL-CIO drive to organise laundry workers, and on Feb. 4th helped man & picket-line outside the city hall demanding a $1.25 minimum wage and a 40-hour week. Meanwhilo, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Commit— tee is actively helping the campaign of the jobless Kentucky miners to draw attention to their plight. It has given thom the use of its office in Washington and assisted them in picketing the White House carlier this month. A joint conference is to be held on March 26-29.
