from our transport correspondent The warnings given in articles by myself and others in The Week about the nature of the recent agreement between the unions and municipal bus undertakings have been confirmed with a vengeance. Just before Xmas, 650 bus drivers and conductors of the Birkenhead Corporation forfeited 6 months! service fay under the new agreement because they went on unofficial strike. The service pay award has only just come into existence. It is distributed at six-monthly intervals and the Birkenhead men would have got it on the second pay day in June. In the case of men with 20 years! service the pay would have been £39. Strike action was taken over delsy by the management in considering the request for a 40-hour week spread over five days. In the first instance, dismissal notices were sent out but these were withdrawn when the workers reported for duty, Members of the Labour Party must make "4+ hot" for any Labour Councillor who has a hand in anything of this kind.
