Moroccan trade union leader, Mahjoub Ben Seddick, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment on July 11 for failing "to respect the authority of the Government." The secretary-general of Morocco's Labour Federation had sent sent a telegram to the Royal palace challenging the Government's condemnation of an unofficial boycott of the 90,000-strong Jewish community in Morocco as a result of last month's Arab-Israel war. His arrest on Friday touched off a nation-wide general strike called by his union. M. Seddick had denounced what he described as the Government's "constant and unconditional support of a handful of Zionist provocateurs." The unofficial boycott of the Jewish community was organised by the opposition Istiqal Party immediately after the Mjddle East war broke out. The Government described the boycott as "criminal."
