Reuter reports that James Hoffa, president of the Teamsters(lorry drivers) Union, went on trial in Chicago on April 27th with seven others on charges of illegally obtaining 20m.dollars(about £7m.) in loans from the Teamsters! pension fund. Hoffa was convicted la®t month in Nashville, Tennessee, on a charge of tampering with a jury. He is appealing. One of co-defendants in Nashville, Harry Bell, was sentenced to 5 years in gaol and a 5,000 dollar fine. He is also appealing. Hoffa now faces losing the union's defence fund to pay his legal ° bills, as theWMion's general counsdl has advised that continued payment of his defence costs is illegal. (!!!
